Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), declared during a rally in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, commemorating the nine-year tenure of the Narendra Modi government, that he intends to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections once again from the Kaiserganj constituency. The rally was part of the BJP's Mahasampark Abhiyan campaign for the upcoming elections.
Singh, who is currently facing allegations of sexual harassment by prominent women wrestlers in India, did not directly address the ongoing protest by wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Mallik, and Bajrang Punia during his speech. Instead, he began with a poem expressing his sentiments about the situation.
Earlier, Singh had postponed his Jan Chetna Maharally in Ayodhya, which was scheduled for June 5, citing an ongoing police investigation into the sexual harassment allegations made against him by seven female wrestlers, including a minor. He mentioned that the Supreme Court had issued serious directions in the matter and accused his political opponents and their parties of leveling false accusations against him.
In the latest development, it has been learned that the Delhi Police has requested the two top women wrestlers, who accused Singh of inappropriate touching, to provide photographic, audio, and video evidence to support their allegations.
Meanwhile, the wrestlers who resumed their protests in April have agreed to pause their demonstrations until June 15. This is the deadline given by Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, who held extensive talks with the wrestlers, for the Delhi Police to file a chargesheet in the case.
