Lucknow, June 7, 2023: In a tragic incident that once again raises concerns about the state of law and order, a gangster was fatally shot outside a courtroom in Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh. The shooter, reportedly disguised as a lawyer, also injured a police officer.
The victim, identified as Sanjiv Maheshwari, popularly known as Sanjiv Jeeva, was a notorious gangster who operated a criminal gang in western Uttar Pradesh. A video footage captured the aftermath of the incident, showing Sanjiv Jeeva lying on the ground while officials attempted to control his bleeding.
The Joint CP of Law and Order in the Lucknow Police, Upendra Agarwal, provided details of the incident, stating, "The incident occurred around 3:30 pm when he was shot in the back. Two of our policemen and a woman with her child also sustained injuries, but they are now out of danger. Sanjiv Jeeva was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead."
The authorities have arrested the assailant, and investigations are underway to determine if there were multiple attackers involved in the incident. Reports indicate that lawyers present at the court managed to apprehend one of the attackers and hand him over to the police.
Sanjiv Jeeva, donning a green shirt and blue jeans, had a criminal record with numerous cases against him. He operated several criminal syndicates in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and his criminal activities spanned over many years. Additionally, he had affiliations with gangsters from eastern Uttar Pradesh, such as Mukhtar Ansari.
The manner in which the attacker managed to enter the court premises with a revolver remains unclear and is currently under investigation.
This incident follows the recent killing of gangster Atiq Ahmed while he was in police custody, adding to concerns regarding the security and safety of individuals involved in criminal cases.
