Head-On Collision Between OSRTC and Private Bus in Ganjam Claims 12 Lives and Injures Several Others


Ganjam district, Odisha: A devastating road accident occurred today near Digapahandi in Ganjam district, resulting in the loss of 12 lives and leaving numerous individuals injured. The collision involved an OSRTC (Odisha State Road Transport Corporation) bus and a private bus.

All the injured passengers from both buses have been promptly transported to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for immediate medical attention. Ganjam Collector Dibyajyoti Parida informed the media, "We have received information about the unfortunate demise of 10 people in the accident, with six individuals currently receiving treatment at MKCG Hospital. A critically injured individual has been shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. Adequate arrangements have been made here for the treatment of the injured individuals."


According to Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek, preliminary investigations suggest that the collision was a head-on collision between the two buses, which occurred around 1 am. The private bus was returning from Berhampur, carrying a marriage party from Khandadeuli village in the district, while the OSRTC bus was en route to Bhubaneswar from Rayagada. "Several passengers of the private bus have tragically lost their lives or sustained injuries, while those on the OSRTC bus have suffered minor injuries," stated SP Saravana Vivek. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear, and further investigations are underway.

In response to the tragic incident, the Odisha government has announced financial assistance of Rs 30,000 for each injured person to cover their medical expenses. The State Revenue Control (SRC), Government of Odisha, tweeted, "In a tragic bus accident last night near Khemundi College under Sanakhemundi tahasil, 10 people died. Eight injured persons are receiving treatment at MKCG Medical College, Berhampur. Rs 30,000 will be provided to each injured person for treatment under the supervision of @Ganjam_Admin."


As of the latest update, two more individuals have succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total death toll to 12. Among the deceased, six were men, four were women, and two were minors.
