New Delhi, 27, May 2023 - Residents of Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and Faridabad were greeted with heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder on Saturday morning. As dark clouds blanketed the national capital region, power cuts occurred in various areas, and four flights had to be diverted.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the entire Delhi and NCR region can expect thunderstorms, dust storms, and light to moderate intensity rain with gusty winds of 40-70 km/h. The bad weather conditions also affected flight operations at the Delhi airport. Travelers were advised to check with their respective airlines for any changes in the arrival and departure schedules.
IGI airport data provided by the IMD indicated that Delhi experienced moderate to severe thunderstorms with very strong gusty winds. At 6 am, the westerly-southwesterly winds reached speeds of 65 km/h, with gusts peaking at 99 km/h.
The IMD forecasted that areas in the National Capital Region, including Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad, and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, as well as several regions in Rajasthan and Haryana, would experience thunderstorms, rain, and gusty winds. The weather department expected light to moderate intensity rain and winds in various towns and cities of these states.
The heavy rainfall brought much-needed relief to Delhi-NCR residents after the IMD declared an end to the heatwave across India. An orange alert had been issued for several states, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Chandigarh, with the possibility of hailstorms, storms, and rain. The IMD scientist RK Jenamani had previously stated that heavy rains were anticipated in hilly areas for the next 2-3 days, along with the possibility of storms in East India.
