India Clinches SAFF Championship Title in Thrilling Penalty Shootout

In a nail-biting finale at the SAFF Championship, the Indian football team secured their ninth championship title by defeating Kuwait 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout. The summit clash remained deadlocked at 1-1 after 120 minutes of play. In the penalty shootout, both teams scored four goals each after five rounds, leading to sudden death. Ultimately, India's Mahesh Naorem scored while goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made a crucial save, securing the victory for the home side.


India's Lallianzuala Chhangte equalized in the 39th minute after Shabaib Al Khaldi had given Kuwait an early lead in the 14th minute. Notably, India and Kuwait had previously played out a 1-1 draw in their last group match.

SAFF Tournament: A Showcase of South Asian Football

The SAFF Championship is a prestigious international football tournament that primarily features teams from the South Asian subcontinent. Organized by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF), one of the sub-confederations under the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), it brings together teams from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives, and Bhutan.


History of SAFF Championship

The tournament's first edition, originally known as the SAARC Gold Cup, took place in 1993, even before the formation of SAFF. India emerged as the victors in the inaugural edition held in Lahore, Pakistan, with Sri Lanka finishing as the runners-up.

In 2010, the SAFF Women's Championship was introduced, providing a platform for women's football in the region. The Indian women's football team clinched the first title with a 1-0 victory over Nepal, with Sasmita Mallik scoring the winning goal.
