Bengaluru, May 22, 2023 - In a significant political development, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar paid a visit to former Chief Minister S M Krishna, who is now a BJP leader. The meeting took place at Krishna's residence in Bengaluru.
Captured in visuals shared by news agency ANI, Shivakumar sought Krishna's blessings during the meeting. In a gesture of respect, Shivakumar presented a flower bouquet and shawl to the senior politician. In return, Krishna gifted a book to the newly appointed Deputy CM of Karnataka.
The relationship between Shivakumar and Krishna goes beyond politics, as they are also relatives. Shivakumar's daughter is married to Krishna's grandson. Shivakumar has often referred to Krishna as his political mentor, seeking guidance from him during Krishna's tenure as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004.
It is noteworthy that Krishna, who is 90 years old, joined the BJP in March 2017 after ending his long-standing association with the Congress, spanning nearly 50 years. During his political career, Krishna served as the 16th Chief Minister of Karnataka from the Congress party, held the position of Governor of Maharashtra, and served as the External Affairs Minister in the United Progressive Alliance government led by Manmohan Singh from 2009 to 2012. Additionally, Krishna was the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from December 1989 to January 1993 and served as a member of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha at different times between 1971 and 2014.
In related news, D K Shivakumar, also the KPCC President, recently took the oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka. The Congress party achieved a remarkable victory in the state's recent Assembly elections, securing 135 seats out of the 224-member Assembly. The BJP managed to secure only 66 seats, while the JDS was reduced to 19 seats.
Looking ahead, the Karnataka Congress has shifted its focus to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. During an address to party workers, Shivakumar expressed his desire for improved performance, stating that the Assembly poll victory was just the beginning. Emphasizing the importance of hard work, he urged party members to remain dedicated and not become complacent with just one win.
