Law Commission of India Calls for Public Input on Uniform Civil Code

New Delhi, June 15, 2023 : The Law Commission of India has opened the floor for fresh suggestions from the public and religious organizations regarding the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). In a statement released on the Press Information Bureau (PIB) website, the Commission announced its intention to seek input from stakeholders on this significant matter.

The 21st Law Commission had previously conducted a thorough review of the UCC and actively sought the perspectives of various stakeholders through an appeal and questionnaire issued on July 10, 2016. In subsequent years, public notices were released on March 19, March 27, and April 10 in 2018 to further engage the public in shaping the discourse around the UCC.

Due to the overwhelming responses received during the previous rounds of solicitation, the 22nd Law Commission has now decided to once again invite the public and recognized religious organizations to contribute their views and ideas on the UCC. This move underscores the Commission's commitment to gathering comprehensive feedback and fostering inclusivity in the decision-making process.

It is noteworthy that the government has not yet made a final decision regarding the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the country. In a parliamentary session held in February, the former Law Minister, Kiren Rijiju, clarified that the government has not taken a definitive stance on the UCC bill. Rijiju further informed that the matter would be presented for consideration to the 22nd Law Commission, which will thoroughly examine the diverse aspects of the UCC and formulate recommendations.
