New Delhi, Jun 8, 2023 - Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was met with interruptions and chants of 'Modi, Modi' during his speech at the inauguration of the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University's East Delhi campus. In a video capturing the incident, Kejriwal can be seen responding with composure, "With folded hands, I request the people from both parties to listen to what I have to say for 5 minutes. If you don't like it, you can continue sloganeering later."
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took to Twitter to share a clip of the incident and accused BJP workers of causing a ruckus at the event. Kejriwal addressed the hecklers, highlighting the need for improvements in the education system beyond mere slogans, stating, "If the education system had improved by raising such slogans, it would have happened in the last 70 years."
Despite the interruptions, Kejriwal remained undeterred and urged the audience to respect his right to speak. "I know you might not like my ideas and thoughts. You can make comments, but this is not right. Everyone has the right to speak in this democracy," he emphasized.
The incident didn't spare Delhi Education Minister Atishi either, as certain sections of the audience greeted her with jeering. In response, she quipped, "This is why education is needed." Her remark was met with applause and noises of approval.
Outside the campus, sloganeering continued between AAP and BJP workers during the inauguration ceremony, according to news agency PTI. The Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University's east Delhi campus has become a focal point of contention between the AAP-led city government and Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, with both sides claiming credit for the new campus.
