Amid Extended Outage, Musk Initially Limits, then Increases Tweet Reading Limits on Twitter

July 2, 2023: Twitter users have been facing prolonged difficulties accessing new posts due to an extended outage on the platform. In response to the ongoing issue, Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, announced an increase in the tweet reading limits for verified and unverified accounts.

In a tweet, Musk outlined the revised usage quotas for users. Verified account holders will now be able to read up to 10,000 tweets per day, a significant increase from the previous limit of 6,000. Unverified users will also see a boost in their reading allowance, with the limit raised to 1,000 tweets per day, up from 600. Additionally, the limit for new unverified accounts has been raised to 500 tweets per day, compared to the previous limit of 300.

Musk explained that these new constraints are necessary measures to address the "extreme levels of data scraping" and "system manipulation" being carried out by several hundred organizations. While he did not disclose the specific entities involved or the duration of the issue, Musk has previously expressed concerns about data scraping and indicated his willingness to take action against those responsible.

Interestingly, a developer has pointed out that the current technical problem Twitter is facing appears to be caused by a bug in the platform's web app, which is generating an infinite loop of requests to the Twitter servers.

The recent tweet reading limits were imposed by Twitter on July 1, a move aimed at tackling the data scraping issue. Verified accounts were initially limited to 6,000 tweets per day, while unverified accounts were restricted to reading only 600 tweets per day.

Twitter's ongoing technical hiccups have been a cause for concern among its users in recent months. This latest outage and the subsequent increase in tweet reading limits come at a time when Meta, the parent company of social media giant Facebook, is reportedly preparing to launch its own Twitter rival.

As Twitter works to resolve its technical issues and provide a more stable experience for users, Elon Musk's decision to increase tweet reading limits aims to alleviate frustrations and provide a smoother browsing experience.
