PM Modi Inaugurates New Parliament Building; Installs 'Sengol' near Lok Sabha Speaker's Chair

New Delhi, May 28, 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the much-anticipated new Parliament building today, marking a momentous occasion for India. In his address to esteemed dignitaries inside the newly inaugurated building, Prime Minister Modi expressed the collective pride felt by every Indian.

Following the unveiling ceremony, PM Modi performed a puja and installed the revered 'Sengol' in the Lok Sabha chamber, adjacent to the Speaker's chair. The historic 'Sengol' was presented to him by Adheenams, further symbolizing the sanctity and significance of the occasion.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized that India, being the mother of democracy, not only embodies democratic principles but also aims to rise as a self-reliant nation. He further underscored that the new Parliament building would bear witness to India's journey towards self-sufficiency.

To commemorate the inauguration, PM Modi also released a special commemorative postage stamp and a ₹75 coin, serving as lasting mementos of this historic event.

The inauguration ceremony featured messages from President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, conveyed by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh. The proceedings commenced with a traditional 'puja' consisting of Vedic rituals, lasting approximately one hour, with the presence of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla alongside PM Modi.

Prior to the inauguration, 19 opposition parties, including the Congress, had jointly declared their intention to boycott the event. In a joint statement, they asserted that the construction of a new building held little value when the "soul of democracy has been sucked out from the Parliament." The four-storey building, designed by Ahmedabad-based HCP Design, Planning and Management, and constructed by Tata Projects Limited, stands as a testament to India's commitment to democracy. The construction cost of the building is estimated at ₹970 crore.
