New Delhi, May 28, 2023: Today marks a historic moment as India's new Parliament building, replacing the colonial-era structure, is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Undeterred by the opposition's boycott call, PM Modi expressed his disappointment at the lack of "due respect" shown by the Congress party towards the symbolic sceptre, known as sengol, which represents the transfer of power from the British in 1947. Despite the boycott by 19 parties, PM Modi remains resolute in opening the new Parliament and emphasized the government's commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities to the public.
Addressing seers from the Shaivite sect in Tamil Nadu, PM Modi received the sengol and their blessings, underscoring its significance as a symbol of power transfer. The sacred Thiruvaduthurai Adheenam crafted the sengol in 1947, serving as a beacon of India's liberation from centuries of colonial rule. Reflecting on the emotional bond between Tamil culture and India's democratic future, PM Modi celebrated the connection between the glorious past and the vibrant future of the nation.
PM Modi also criticized previous Congress governments, expressing regret that the sengol had not been given the respect and honorable position it deserved. He revealed that the sceptre had been displayed as a mere walking stick in Anand Bhawan, Prayagraj. However, the present government has reclaimed the sengol and will install it near the Lok Sabha Speaker's chair in the new Parliament building. The Adheenams who crafted the sengol will be present during the inauguration.
Tamil superstar Rajnikanth expressed his gratitude to PM Modi for making Tamilians proud by ensuring the sengol's place in India's new Parliament. Recognizing Tamil Nadu's pivotal role in the freedom struggle and Indian nationalism, PM Modi pledged to acknowledge the state's contributions and ensure its rightful recognition. He also highlighted the connection between Tamil Nadu and his own parliamentary constituency, Varanasi.
Amidst the preparations for the inauguration, workers are giving the final touches to the new Parliament building, equipped with modern facilities and advanced technology. This inauguration marks the completion of the second phase of the government's ambitious Central Vista redevelopment project.
The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin early in the morning and will continue until 2 pm.
