Strong Earthquake Tremors Felt in Delhi and Parts of North India

Date: June 13, 2023

Strong earthquake tremors shook Delhi, the National Capital Region (NCR), and parts of North India today, causing panic among residents. The earthquake, measuring 5.4 magnitude, struck around 1:30 PM, lasting only a few seconds. The epicenter was reported to be in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir, according to the National Centre for Seismology.

Despite the intensity of the tremors, no immediate reports of damage or loss of life were received from anywhere. The effects of the earthquake were felt in various cities and regions, including Chandigarh, Noida, Jaipur, and Jammu and Kashmir. Surprisingly, the tremors were even felt in distant locations such as Islamabad, Lahore, and nearby areas in Pakistan.

In response to the earthquake, concerned individuals took to social media platforms, particularly Twitter, to share updates and express their experiences. Memes referencing the frequency of recent earthquakes circulated online, reflecting the apprehension among the public. Additionally, videos emerged showing the impact of the earthquake, including one in which a chandelier can be seen swaying under the force of the tremors.

This seismic event follows a mild tremor that occurred in Delhi last month, which was attributed to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan. While today's earthquake did not cause significant damage, it serves as a reminder of the region's vulnerability to seismic activity.

According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake registered a magnitude of 5.4 and originated in eastern Kashmir. Preliminary reports indicate that the epicenter was located 18 km from the village of Gandoh Bhalessa in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 30 km.

Residents of Srinagar, the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir, shared their experiences with news agency ANI. One local resident mentioned that the earthquake frightened school children, causing them to evacuate their classrooms. People in shops also hurriedly exited their establishments, as the tremors were more intense compared to the previous week's seismic activity.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising residents to remain cautious. As seismic activity can be unpredictable, it is essential for individuals in earthquake-prone regions to stay informed and be prepared for any future occurrences.
