Cobie Smulders, known for her role as Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently gave fans a glimpse into what they can expect from the upcoming series 'Secret Invasion.' In an interview with People, Smulders revealed that the show will take a darker tone compared to previous Marvel productions.
"It's hard to know who to trust," Smulders said, emphasizing the uncertainty and intrigue that will be central to the storyline. 'Secret Invasion' follows the efforts of Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, as he tries to protect the world from a group of rebel Skrulls who have infiltrated positions of power globally.
According to Smulders, the series will shed light on the lives of agents working to safeguard Earth. "Now, there is a major discovery of the Skrulls," she explained. "Maria [Hill] has been trying to get Nick Fury back to Earth to help with various problems, but it's the public exposure of the Skrulls that finally grabs his attention."
Smulders also highlighted the advantage of Marvel creating content for streaming services, allowing fans to spend more time with characters and delve deeper into their backstories. "It's been an absolute dream to play Maria Hill for the last 10 years," she expressed. "She is a fantastic, multi-layered character who has faced intense moments in Marvel history."
The actress mentioned that Maria Hill was last seen in 'Spider-Man: Far From Home,' where it was revealed that she was a Skrull. This leaves the audience wondering about her recent activities. "I'd like to think that she's been sipping Mai Tais on vacation somewhere after coming back from the Blip," Smulders mused, "but most likely, she has been dealing with a mountain of backlogged issues."
'Secret Invasion' boasts an impressive cast, including Samuel L. Jackson, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Don Cheadle, Martin Freeman, Ben Mendelsohn, and Kingsley Ben-Adir. The series explores the conspiracy surrounding the infiltration of shapeshifting Skrull double agents into positions of power worldwide, led by Ben-Adir's character, Gravik.
Fans won't have to wait much longer to unravel the secrets of 'Secret Invasion.' The highly anticipated series is set to premiere on Disney+ on June 21.
