Kolhapur, Maharashtra, June 08, 2023 - Tensions flared in Kolhapur as violent clashes broke out following the circulation of a viral social media post praising Aurangzeb. Hindu organizations took to the streets in protest, prompting the police to employ lathi charges to restore order.
The incident unfolded on Tuesday when a post glorifying Aurangzeb surfaced on a WhatsApp group. In response, two factions engaged in physical altercations, leading to a chaotic situation in the city. Lathi-wielding individuals clashed with each other, while stone-pelting added to the unrest.
Superintendent of Police Mahendra Pandit confirmed that the contentious post triggered the turmoil. Hindu organizations swiftly announced a Kolhapur bandh (shutdown) in protest against those responsible for circulating the post. Demands for strict action against the individuals involved were voiced during the demonstrations.
The clashes, marked by lathi charges and stone-throwing, took place in prominent areas such as Dussehra Chowk, Town Hall, and Laxmipura. The entire district faced a tense atmosphere, necessitating immediate police intervention. Law enforcement resorted to lathi charges to disperse the agitated crowds and bring the situation under control.
Wednesday witnessed a citywide shutdown as Hindu organizations had called for a Kolhapur bandh in response to the Aurangzeb post. Presently, the situation is reported to be under control, and authorities have appealed to the public to maintain peace and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
Meanwhile, two individuals have been booked at Laxmipura Police Station for their involvement in circulating the controversial WhatsApp post. Investigations are underway to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident. As a precautionary measure, Section 144 has been imposed in the area until June 19.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis commented on the situation, expressing concern over the rising incidents of glorifying Aurangzeb. He questioned the propagation of such sentiments and emphasized that those in positions of power should discourage such behavior.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and efforts are being made to ensure a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions in Kolhapur.
